Ukraine on the agenda for campaign group event in Cannock

Ukraine will be high on the agenda for an event in Cannock which aims to help people find ways to tackle global humanitarian issues on a local level.

Cannock Chase Cares is organising the event, which will be held at Cannock Library on Saturday, March 12.

Speakers have been lined up to talk about various issues, including what can be done to help the people of Ukraine.

Organiser Emily Aitchison said: “We are pushing for the UK to accept Ukrainian refugees and we will be discussing ways that we can make this happen, among other things.

“We want ordinary people to come along, people who would like to help communities across the world, and who want to see changes in all sorts of global issues, but aren’t sure how they can help.

“It’s all about fairness and justice across the world. On a local level people can sometimes feel helpless, but by working together we can do something about it. There is power in numbers.”

Cannock Chase Cares is part of Aid Alliance. Emily and other representatives recently went to parliament where they met South Staffordshire MP Gavin Williamson to talk about global vaccine equity.

“It was a positive experience, he listened to what we had to say,” said Emily. “We made our case and we want people to know that they can do the same if there is something they feel strongly about.”

Emily will be among the speakers at the event on March 12. Joining her will be Kathryn Downs, chair of Chase Pride and mayor of Hednesford, and Mahnaz Shariat, human rights activist.

As well as the Ukraine crisis, they will be speaking about international aid and community activism, how to tackle the persecution in LGBTQ+ people across the world and human rights abuses in the Middle East.

The event runs from 11am until 1pm and is free, but those who wish to attend should register at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/272877141877
