Unique wellness programme launches to help women transform their relationship with alcohol for improved mental health and wellbeing

A unique wellness coaching programme and alcohol-free community has launched, specifically designed for women looking to transform their relationship with alcohol whilst improving their mental health and wellbeing

Founded by Carmela Coop-Rodia and Esther Beal, www.Totiuss.com offers an alcohol-free community and unique wellness programme that is specifically designed for women. The aim is to bring together thousands of like-minded women to support one another and go on a journey to change their relationship with alcohol and transform their mind and body.

Derived from the Latin word for ‘whole’, Totiuss is preparing to launch the first official 100-day programme in October after a successful test wave that ran from the start of June with 137 women. The programme aims to help women understand the role that alcohol consumption plays in their overall mental and physical health, assisting them in making better, more informed choices to become the best version of themselves.

Those who go on their journey with Totiuss don’t have to abstain from alcohol permanently beyond the 100-days, but they are encouraged to remain sober for the length of the programme in order to feel the benefits and to learn more about themselves and their relationship with alcohol. The hope is that many will choose to live an alcohol-free life following the end of the programme for their own health and wellbeing.

Research has shown that one in five women (19%) are likely to experience common mental health disorders throughout their life, such as depression or anxiety, and women are twice as likely to experience anxiety as men. Unhealthy drinking behaviours and anxiety commonly exist together, with anxiety often found to be the drive to drink (while it can also occur as a result of drinking).

Furthermore, alcohol has also been proven to risk women’s health in more ways than it does for men, and women face a unique set of triggers and stigmatised views around alcohol consumption. This is why Totiuss has been designed for women – to focus on their unique needs.

The 100-day programme is split into 10 individual sprints, each lasting 10 days. Within each sprint, Totiuss participants have access to three workout videos (lower body blitz, upper body blast and fab abs), three yoga flows following a set theme, two guided meditations, one mental health coaching video and course materials. In addition, those on their journey receive nutritional insight around a female health related topic and supporting recipes for each sprint to educate women around for optimum female wellbeing.

The start-up has worked with four dedicated experts to deliver the programme: psychologist Zoe Owl (a published mental health practitioner who specialises in addiction), nutritionist Sarah Hanratty, yoga and meditation coach Christine Holdsworth and personal trainer Calum Kitscha. Totiuss also proudly supports charity Alcohol Change UK by committing to donate 5% of its profits to the cause.

“It’s so easy to fall into bad habits with alcohol, whether it’s binging at the weekend or having a glass or two most nights of the week to de-stress after a long day. There has also been a worrying trend towards the promotion of the ‘mummy wine culture’, which is having a big impact on women’s mental and physical wellbeing. We live in a culture where drinking is glamorized, but it’s important to realise that this isn’t healthy and can have damaging effects on many areas of our lives.

“I was a stressed out working mum trying to juggle the demands of parenting, family and a career and used wine after a stressful day as a way to unwind. When I was looking to embark on an alcohol-free journey I didn’t know where to start. I didn’t resonate towards existing means of support, such as AA, so I mainly found support from others on social media also on an alcohol-free journey, but with no process to follow it was quite a lonely journey and felt very hard at times.

“I felt that there needed to be more support available for women like me who would class themselves as ‘grey area drinkers’ and so, along with my friend and business partner Esther, set about working with a team of experts to create a holistic body and mind approach to help women assess their relationship with alcohol and improve their mental and physical health. The programme helps women address bad habits they’ve potentially formed without even realising it and also become fitter, healthier, happier, stronger, and more confident; all the while surrounded by a supportive group of women on the very same journey.

“It takes an average of 66 days for a habit to become automatic, which is why many of the existing sobriety challenges or programmes don’t help people beyond the short time frame. For us, 100 days just made sense. Everyone should try going alcohol-free for a period of time as there are so many health benefits from taking a break.”
