A Year of Family Recipes
5 out of 5 stars
When Lesley married Jonathon Wild, she also married into the famous Bettys and Taylors family business, which Jonathon joined 5 days before their wedding. For her part, she brought to the marriage a passion for good food, seasonal food being something she grew up to appreciate. As she tells us in the introduction to her hard-backed book, it was inevitable that she would be drawn into the world of tea, though she resisted at first. She has come to love evert aspect of Bettys but, for her, the pinnacle moment was the opening of Bettys Cookery School in Harrogate. Lesley describes this as her “own part of Bettys”. The Cookery School has strengthened through Lesley’s commitment coupled with her concern that children learn practical cooking skills, which she offers to local schools.
“A Year of Family Recipes” is a feast of seasonal recipes from Watercress Soup and Hot Cross Buns in the Spring, to Cheese and Herb Paté and Fresh Fruit Tartlets in the Summer; from Pumpkin-seed Bread and Apple Cake in the Autumn, to Winter warmers such as Swiss Pearl Barley Soup and Pears Poached in Red Wine. The book exudes quality from the cover and ribbon page marker to the glorious pictures inside. The recipes for each season are colour coded from the contents page to each page in that section having the ingredients on the right hand side of the book in the same colour. This is a book to savour – to read, to enjoy the pictures as well, of course, to try out the wealth of recipes on offer.
It was an honour to review this book and can highly recommend it to readers of tea magazine. One to enjoy over a good pot of tea …
